Arts & Culture A little bit of everything
The central position of The Well House means you’re right at the heart of Sutton’s cultural offerings. Sutton has a range of public art to admire, a large library, a music venue and a cinema. If you love your music, The Sound Lounge is for you. A grassroots music venue, serving plant-based food, local craft beer and carbon neutral wines. The Nightingale Pub and O’Neill’s also hold live music nights – keep an eye on their listings to see what’s coming up. Love art? Then you can either take a walk around the town centre and admire the many public works of art including works of sculpture and murals. Or, if you prefer to be indoors, then Sutton Central Library’s Art Gallery provides a wide range of contemporary art, heritage and history experiences.
A little further afield, Whitehall Museum is as fascinating a piece of architecture as it is a beacon of local history. Found in the Cheam Village Conservation Area, it is a rare survivor of domestic architecture and in the top five per cent of significant buildings in the country. Its original timber structure was built around 1500, while its additions mark the passing of time and taste through the generations. Also, worth a trip are Oaks Park Studios, an artists’ community, based in old stables once part of the estate of the Earl of Derby, of the world-famous horse race in Epsom. Now occupied by a group of visual artists, whose practice includes painting, sculpture, stained glass, printmaking and puppetry, they hold open weekends every summer and take part in the Carshalton Artists Open Studios.
